Collective inactions, drawings, installation, sound, 2020
This year, especially acutely, we realized how much commonality means in the face of a pandemic. We tried to behave well, sitting at home and taking all the precautions, yielding to the usual way of life. Many people around the world found themselves in similar conditions, and we realized how unprepared we were for unplanned problems, how frivolous and fragile our existence is.
At the same time, now in Russia we are in a situation where we not only failed to defeat the pandemic, but also failed to defend our political rights and freedoms. These circumstances bring us to the threshold of a future that we do not understand and fear. Everything is foggy, and in this situation our activity resembles chaotic movements directed in different directions.
But as we know, humanity has had to change and adapt throughout its thousand-year history, so it seems worth looking into the future with moderate optimism. It is possible that now a new joint experience will give impetus to a more effective collectivity and interactions of a different nature, aimed at maintaining the ecological and social balances on the planet.
Now community for us is inaction. At a time when it would seem that everyone understands each other as well as possible, we suddenly lost faith in the ability to influence something, and froze in anticipation and misunderstanding. Inaction leads to a deterioration in empathy, disunity and loss of social ties. My works describe this state. I model various situations in which people cannot express themselves, and take on the role of outside observers, obedient performers, random passers-by, etc. society into a cluster of lonely subjects. Is it possible that the pandemic will be a lesson for all, and we can overcome disunity and apathy, go into the future with new skills and new solidarity?
